Temple of Karnak

Among the destroyed structures is the outstanding Temple of Amun-Re, which has 10 entrances, pylons. The largest entrance has a width of 113m and a height of 45m. The huge portico is located next to the huge pylons.

The whole temple complex is walled and has three precincts: Amun, of Month, and Mut. Next to it rises the temple of Aton, which used to be connected with the temple of Karnak by an avenue. This avenue was surrounded on both sides by several sphinxes.

After the construction of the temple of Amun Re, further temples of Karnak were built in Luxor in the early Middle Kingdom, with which thus the temple complex was created. Two of those temples are dedicated to the wife of Amun and her son. Furthermore, a temple is dedicated to the god Month, who was the main god in the 11th Dynasty.

The temple of Karnak consists of the following areas:

– White Chapel: is made of white limestone and was established in the 12th Dynasty. It was used as a “banquet hall” and is located between the third and seventh entrances.

– Red Chapel: was built in the 18th Dynasty by Hatshepsut and once stood next to the White Chapel, was later neglected by Thutmosis III, and its material was used for the third entrance.

– Alabaster Chapel: was built in the 18th Dynasty and had its original place also NEAR the White Chapel.

– Temple of Ramses III: to the right in the backyard of the 1st pylon extends the temple of Ramses III and is still very well preserved.

– Holy lake: south of the central temple building with a size of 151 x 77 m

– Temple of Opet: was established by Ptolemy Vlll.

– Temple of Chon: has a length of 80m and a width of 30m and is located in the southern part of the Amun district. Was established during the reign of Ramses ll.

– Temple of Path: is located north in the district of Amun

– Temple of Amenophis ll: located east behind the 10 pylon

– District of Month: is located north of the district of Amun and has a size of 151 x 155 m

– District of Mut: 250 x 350 m in size and is located south of the district of Amun

– Temple of Mut

– Temple A: located to the east of the Temple of Mut
